I recently purchased the new Garretts Propointer for the wife and her MXT. After using the Merlin, Bullseye II, Vibraprobe 560 and the Harbour Freight $15 special, I think I am going to purchase the Garretts for myself. I just wondered if any of you have used and compared it to any others like the Automax, Fischer, Detector Pro or others I have not used yet. The DC settings and the extra weight are the problems with the DX-1. To get depth with the DX-1 you have to pump the DC up or it doesn't get near the depth that the Garrett's does. The Vibraprobes get the depth but the interfearance is annoying. Any other input from anyone would be appreciated. Rolling Eyes

It may just seem like it but I run the AC high (72-75) and the preamp gain at at least 3 with my Bigfoot or the 6x10 when coinshooting and sometimes get false signals after probing or digging about 4-5 inches. I guess it could be some heavier mineralization that we have trouble with here in the mountains and sometimes maybe EMI.

I am not familiar yet with advanced settings as I have owned my DFX just a little over a year but have been in the hobby 30+ years. I try to use the flow chart in Jeff's book (DDWDFX) but when in the field I'm too anxious in getting to hunt before the next cold front comes through. The other thing is the DX-1 adds some weight after swinging it for 5 or 6 hours especially with the Bigfoot on open fields. Thanks for the suggestion.

jaybird, I run DC at about 55. This seems 'a bit hot' for the DX-1, but I need the DC up there for Mixed Mode.

When I go to the DX-1, I flick the little DX-1 box to Probe as I set the detector down. I don't put the DFX switch forward until I'm in the hole. That usually keeps the probe 'sane'. If it's squirrelly, I cycle both switches off & on again (same sequence) with the probe in the hole and that takes care of it.

Love the DX-1 and love Mixed Mode.

Plunk Twang, Thanks for the hint and thanks to mhammer for the encouragement. I was out today as cold as it was and I had the DC at 55 with the Bigfoot coil and program I found here. The AC was up to 72 and PAG at 4 for awhile until it became a little unstable at a low voltage of 9.5. The DX-1 was performing well and pinpointing at about 3-inches O.k. Even found my 4th ring of the year-silver. I have tried Mixed Mode once but quite noisy. I'll have to work my way into it I guess.

I am trying to get to the DFX only hunt this year. I sure would like to meet all the great people here on the forum. LOL Very Happy

It's called the Propointer and I use it and think it's great.

I'll give you my reasons but that doesn't mean other pinpointers might
have some or all of these aspects as well.

1. It is VERY rugged and VERY well-built.

2.It is waterproof. I haven't tried 100% submerging it but it's great when
you have to work around creeks, puddles, mud, etc. Washes off easy.

3. Will give both audio and vibrate alarm, audio increasing frequency as it
gets closer to target.

4. Unlike the DX-1, it adds no weight to Detector Swinging.

5. It has very high reviews on-line as opposed to most other pinpointers.

As for possible cons, It is noisy and not for Stealthy Night Hunting. It does
not have the depth of that pistol-grip one or so I've read. For coins in the
ground I would guesstimate about 2 to 2 1/2 inches is max. distance. This
can be a help at times. For example, both the DFX and V3 can be spoofed
by things like a deep crushed beer-can into reading Silver-range VDI's. If
the Detector says it's close but I dig out a small scoop and the Propointer
reads Nada - that's a good indication I'm being spoofed.

Hope this Helps,

I like the DX-1 and alternatively the Pistol Probe.... the PI probe gets great depth and is easy to use. RickO

I cannot comment on other points, but from what I see, the Garrett Propointer is one of the best. I just got mine today in the mail and damn is it durable... It gets 30 hours on one 9v battery.

It has great features... It has a built in LCD light (like a flashlight), it vibrates when it found metal... and it beeps, if your like 6-7 inches away from the metal it will have a small vibration and beep, the closer you are the louder the beep and the more solid the vibration gets. This way you know your right on the target.

I used it today and wow, I am very impressed. I am glad I did not purchase one of those cheaper ones they sell for under $50 on ebay.

As they say, you get what you pay for.
