I have had my DFX for about a year now, haven't had much chance to get out and use it, but I did last weekend. Using your advice, and after finding only ONE nickel all last summer, I hit a school here in town and found not one, not two, but 3 out of 5 coins in five minutes! Woohoo!
Now, if I could just dial in some gold!
Saw where Sarge found a couple of mood rings, how cool is that! I bought one for my wife, when she's happy, it turns a beautiful green color. When she's ticked off, it leaves a big friggin' red mark on my forehead.... _________________ 2010 coin count: 380

Sweep them from different directions. Note the signagraph and the vdi#. It will change or bounce around. The sound weill be sputtering and sometimes a double sound can be heard as the coil passes over the hole in the tab. I have had them register as low as 13, but if I get 18-20 from all directions, I dig. It wont be a nickle 100% of the time but it will be often. I have never dug one that had a 22-24, I've dug planty and it is always foil of some type. Like the previous post, my mxt finds them everyday. You may want to experiment with 15khz. Good luck and dont give up. I find it very rewarding to find nickles. |
I think the magic answer is the frequency used, 15kHz vs. 3kHz (or both). The MXT uses 14kHz only, and the above two quotes reference finding nickels galore with the MXT. I'm sure there is much value in HOW the target sounds and what the VDI number is, but if your frequency is not very sensitive for nickels, you are just not going to get a strong VDI or tone from those low conductors. I would experiment with pure 3kHz vs. 15kHz with a nickel and pull tab or beaver tail in the ground at 4-5 inches to really know what the VDI and sound should be like.
I think this begs the question, does an MXT not find many dimes, pennies and quarters at depth greater than 6" ? |

16-19 is magic numbers for old nickles.I dug 6 this weekend all but one fell in this range. The one that did not bounced between 13-16 it was almost 8 inches deep and alittle on edge. the dfx is a nickle snaggin magnet! my nickle count has more than doubled in the last 2 years since i bought my dfx. ive had few detectors in 15 years but none better than the dfx. _________________ he who digs pulltabs finds the rings |

Agree with Todd - the best way to figure it out is to dig everything so you can learn what the detector for the given settings, soil, trash, etc conditions is telling you. That said - I loved tone id and listened for that low tone most of my buffs hit at 17-18 - think it has to do w/ how worn the nickel is . Also noticed that the few warnickels i found hit in the 30s-40s
Just go dig and have fun learning the loot will come w/ experience

As we say here in Texas..... Wooo Hooo. I took the most pulltabs for the month at our last club meeting. 94 in about 10 hours of hunting. I'm really thinking about going into the recycling business with all the shards of aluminum I am getting from an old community center. |

Also when looking for nickles, keep your eye on the signagraph. When I dig nickles I notice they are between 18 and 22 on the VDI scale but my signagraph is usually one solid line or 2 lines toghether. If the signagraph is all over, it will most likely be a pull tab. _________________ Semper Fi |

Ive found nickles also come in 18-20. So do the little eraser ends off pencils.
Ive also noticed the more worn a nickle is the lower it hits- some of my worn buffs dateless ones came in at +17.
I also found a couple of war nickels and for some reason i want to say they came in higher like around 32 or so? it s been awhile and only found a couple of those.
Dig everything close soon enough youll find em and figure it out plus get a ring or two also i bet
