I will be going to the beach during the summer and will be storing my detector in the car when not in use...mind you this is only temporary storage until I get home. What concerns me is the overwhelming heat that accumalates in the car caused by direct sunlight. I will leave a crack in the window to cool the interior, but at times the windows will be up as a theft deterrent.

One of my solutions is ... when I buy a storage case for my dfx, I will buy an ice pack the kind you would buy for coolers and place it somewhere inside the carrying case to keep the contents cool. I have not tried this yet and wonder about condensation build up, I sure this can be fixed. I have read about how heat can damage the detector or the coil and was wanting some kind of nifty advice on keeping the heat away from the electronics.

Have any of you had these concerns or ideas on keeping your detector cool when temporarily stored in the car. Thanks

Why not break it down and put it in a cooler, it wouldnt take much to keep it cool that way 1 ice pack and you would stay ok I would think. Yazoo

If you have decent footroom behind the front seat then lay the unit on the
floorboards/carpet, place an ice pak or two on the carpet, then cover all
with a windshield reflector laid over top. Condensation should run into the
carpet while the reflector screen keeps direct sun off it and helps to trap
cool air low againest the unit & floorboards. Just a thought.

I would not leave the control unit in the car. It is not so big that you can't take it with you...

But if you really want to keep your unit in the car, park it under trees and put your unit in the cooler bag http://www.keepyourcooler.com/picnic-backpack-cooler.html

Thanks TD and all, your suggestions will give me something to think about. I live around the Houston area and have to deal with the heat and humidity during the summer months. When the sun beats down on your car, the heat it creates inside, can easily climb over 100 degrees F. So just as a precautionary approach, I want to keep the detector cool and not worry about any heat related damage. GREAT FORUM!!!

You have a very real concern. I have lived in Houston, and Phoenix. Once in Phoenix, we put a temperature recorder in the trunk of my car... It logged 183 degrees F. ... definitely could damage the electronics. I like the cooler idea the best, with ice packs and a ziplock over the control box tied with velcro. RickO

But do not overdo it... In car on ice, but then outside on the direct sun. The temperature gap should be quite large in short time - nothing good

I have been using the windshield reflectors with the windows cracked VERY little and that alone makes a big difference. Don't know what kind of area you're in though with the windows open (security). Hope this helps.
