I usually run my all metal a little high because of the places I hunt, the targets are really deep. If I come upon a shallow target (3 Inches or less) I have found that you can tilt your coil with your foot and pinpoint strait to it using just the tip of the coil. I have tried both ends of the coil and either end will work. Doesn't get much depth and you cant go by the depth readings but it is spot on where the target is. Might be good to use in a tot lot where things are shallow. Just thought I would post this and maybe someone can use it...

Excellent tip! It is like using the tip of a knife.

Majic - Are you talking about using the D2 coil?

Neil - Can I ask where those two pics of the emitted field came from? And what coil is it supposed to be showing?

Yes, but I was told that any DD coil will work that way.

If I recall, they came from a M*!@#$% FAQ page. There is a similar one on the new G@rrett Ace 350 brochure as well.

Magic - That really is a great tip. At first I didn't realize what you were talking about but when I knew it was the D2 it came to me. I had used the D2 for a while on my DFX on a lake bed that was drained and I had from 15' to 30' of exposed ground. I hunted with the 950 at first then I bought the D2 when it came out. It worked very good there because the ground was littered with so much trash. Both good and bad (iron) metal trash. And the ground already had Limonite building up in it. Limonite was the ore that was mined in the late 1700's in Jersey for iron so the ground is naturally hot there. Anyway I noticed when I pinpointed with it that it is sharper at the top and bottom of the coil. And more towards the front then the back. By that I mean if I pinpointed going forward I could hit a shallow target before the coil was on it. But walking backwards pinpointing it wouldn't hit it until the coil was on it. It favored the front. I remember writing posts about that and suggested as a tip to pinpointing walking backwards until I was on center. It worked good. But I didn't seem to get the depth in good soil as I did with the 950. Most likely I was just to impatient to learn it. Because I did nail a Large Copper at least 10" down and it ID'd it at 82??? on the first hit. Then as I dug some dirt the VDI went up. It read as a Quarter. But it hit it clean and deep. So I personally can't say it won't because I saw it and I have the coin to show for it. I wound up trading the D2 for a 12" as I am not used to any DD's. I do remember that the D2 liked the nickle/gold range also!!!

But back to your tip on tipping it on shallow targets. The way I remember that coil and pinpointing that makes absolute sense and I think that's a great idea. I never thought about trying that. You must be digging a lot of targets to be that in tune with the machine. Bravo!

Neil - I apologize about the way I worded the question. I didn't mean to come off as an ass. I was just wondering if it's a single eliptical coil.
